Set Lifestyle Goals, Not New Year's Resolutions

Set Lifestyle Goals, not New Year's Resolutions

By: Mandy Tegtmeyer, CWP, Wellness Consultant; WorkSpring

Another new year has begun, but how do we make meaningful changes, and THRIVE in 2025? Too often we set New Year’s Resolutions instead of setting long-term lifestyle goals. The truth is that New Year’s Resolutions are usually short-lived. On average, only 9-12% of people keep their New Year’s Resolutions. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like those odds. So, what can we do to set ourselves up for the best year yet?

Set lifestyle goals and not New Year’s Resolutions because…

  • Most people abandon their resolutions by mid-February.
  • Post-holiday exhaustion creates a barrier to making positive changes
  • Embracing fluid goals over year-long resolutions can be more adaptable when life throws unexpected curveballs
  • Focusing too much on a single goal can lead to engaging in unethical or extreme behaviors
  • Self-compassion is more effective than self-criticism

Try swapping out your New Year’s Resolutions with these Lifestyle Goals in 2025 and beyond!

  • Create your own Mantra or Mission Statement
  • Do 30-60 or 90-day Challenges to keep your focus and motivation high
  • Write a Letter to Your Future Self and open your letter on New Year’s Eve Create a Bucket List by month, season, or whatever works best for you
  • Find a "Nudge Word" to inspire change.
  • Eat more whole foods for better health.
  • Prioritize peace of mind through meditation or yoga.
  • Organize your home to reduce stress.
  • Incorporate new eating habits
  • Engage in outdoor activities
